  • Plan Replacements.  In the haste of getting everything ready to go, don't forget that you're still going to need to eat!  People often start with the room they frequent the most (the kitchen) without thinking about all of the items they'll still need during the rest of their time at that location.
As you are packing up your dishes, make sure you have an alternative surface from which to eat.  If you have paper or plastic plates, that's great!  If you don't, set aside a plate or two and keep a bowl on hand, too.  It's never a pleasant experience to make dinner and realize you have nothing to eat it on.

Relocating to a new home can be stressful, but there are some things to remember when moving that can make your transition a little easier and take some of the worry away. Here are some commonly overlooked things that you do need to remember when moving from Point A to Point B:
  • Change Your Address.  This seems obvious, right?  Of course it does right now, but when people are in the middle of the hustle and bustle of moving, changing their address is often the last thing they think about.
Before you get deep into your moving day duties, make a list of everything and everybody that has your current address.  Write it down because this list is going to be much longer than you think it will be!  Include everybody you pay, from your credit card companies to your dog walker.  Any magazines and newspapers to which you subscribe need to be notified, too.  Of course, you'll want to put in an official change with the Post Office to catch anything you might have missed.  
  • Mark Your Must-Haves Box.  When you arrive at your new place, it's not going to be home sweet home from the very start.  Mark a box of must-have items, and keep it accessible.  This box is one of the key things to remember when moving, and it should include items like toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant and shower toiletries, plastic utensils, paper plates and cups, flashlights, paper and pens, and blankets.  Even if you think everything will be accessible when you get there, make sure you have a must-haves box on hand, just in case.
 
  • Identify Alternatives.  One of the most important things to remember when moving is that things don't always go as planned.  While it would be awesome if your home was set up and ready to go when you got there, it's important that you have plans in place in case you hit bumps in the road.  If you're moving near friends or family, ask them ahead of time if they'll have space for you for a night or two in case something goes off-track.  If you don't have acquaintances or available opportunities in the area, identify hotels where you'll be safe and comfortable if need be.
 
  • Purchase Power.  Electricity is one of those things that we can so easily take for granted.  Keep in mind that the lights might not come on at the flip of a switch.  Electricity definitely needs to be remembered when you're moving, and it operates on both sides of the process; you don't want to unpack your items in the dark, but you also don't want someone playing their video games on your dime.  Talk to the electric company well ahead of your move to make sure you'll have power in your new home when you get there, and make sure your current home has a set cut-off date so you're not supplying energy to strangers.
 
  • Inform Your Insurance Companies.  Homeowner's and renter's insurance is obviously contingent upon the address which is being insured, but you may not realize that most car insurance policies are affected by your address, as well; if you're moving a great distance, you may even need to find a new provider.  Before you find yourself accidentally uninsured the hard way, it's best to check in with your insurance providers to ensure you don't have any gaps in coverage.
