How to Pack Dishes for Moving

Moving involves a lot of, well, moving pieces.  You need to relocate every piece of your life, from your shoes to your silverware, and you need to make sure that it gets there safe and sound.  Are you looking at your kitchen and wondering how to pack dishes for moving day?  Don’t worry!  You’re not alone!

Follow these tips, and you will learn how to pack dishes for moving day without breaking a sweat (or a dish)!

  • Think Small.  When you’re getting ready to relocate, you’re probably in the mindset of just “getting it done”.  While this works for most aspects of your home, it’s contrary to optimal ideas regarding how to pack dishes for moving.

Clothing, bedding, and random trinkets can be stacked and packed to your heart’s content.  Dishes, however, are a whole different story.  Besides the fact that you paid good money for these precious pieces of tableware, which makes their breakable profile a potential problem when moving, dishes also get very heavy very quickly.  If you load too many dishes into a single box, the delicate cardboard may not be able to handle the weight of your wares, and this isn’t something you want to find out the hard way.  Before the box breaks, and the dishes fall out and shatter all around you, take care to compile only as many dishes as your box can take.

  • Wrap Right in White.  Tempted to use the newspaper you have lying around to keep your dishes safe during the long haul?  You might want to think again.  Many people have asked us how to pack dishes for moving day, and this question always comes up.

If you are prepared to wash every one of your items when you get to your new home, newspaper is an acceptable substitute.  If you are looking for something that is more user-friendly and will allow you to get to dining right away, chose white packing paper so you will not have ink and stains all over your kitchen items.  Bubble wrap is another option, but it can get costly if you use it in bulk, be choosy with the pieces that need that extra protection.

  • Plan Replacements.  In the haste of getting everything ready to go, don’t forget that you’re still going to need to eat!  People often start with the room they frequent the most (the kitchen) without thinking about all of the items they’ll still need during the rest of their time at that location.

As you are packing up your dishes, make sure you have an alternative surface from which to eat.  If you have paper or plastic plates, that’s great!  If you don’t, set aside a plate or two and keep a bowl on hand, too.  It’s never a pleasant experience to make dinner and realize you have nothing to eat it on.

  • Tack on the Tape.  Don’t be stingy with the sticky stuff!  Tape will help to reinforce those heavy boxes so your articles stays safe in transit.  You will want to tape all flaps together, of course, but make sure you pay particular attention to the bottom and any questionable sides that could decide to explode during transit.  Tape can be replaced much more easily than your dishes, so be generous with your offerings of this tacky helper.  Your dishes will love you for your efforts.
