Are Plastic Storage Bins a Good Option When Moving?

So you’re getting ready to move! One of the many things you’ll need to consider is how to best pack your belongings. Recently there have been many people suggesting plastic storage bins as an alternative to the classic cardboard box. Are they really a good option? Let’s take a look at some of the reasons they may not work well for your move.

Plastic storage bins don’t stack as well as boxes

Getting everything you need into a moving truck can be quite a challenge! It can feel like you need a puzzle master just to make sure everything fits. Even before it’s time to load the truck, you’ll have a room half full of packed boxes and half full of furniture. You need your things boxed up in something that allows for easy stacking. The heavy weight and awkward shape of plastic storage bins makes them a poor choice when stacking is needed.

They take up a lot more room

We’ve all been there: shuffling through a half packed house, wondering how boxes can take up so much room! If you’ve ever been frustrated with the amount of room boxes take, you’ll be disappointed to see how much more room is used when your belongings are placed in plastic storage bins. Stick with the easier, lighter alternative for a more organized move.

It’s difficult to label plastic bins

The one tip that makes unpacking much easier is labeling every box you pack. You can simply write down the room each box will go in, or you can write a brief list on each box of what can be found inside it. This is much more complicated with plastic bins because you can’t write directly on them. You’ll have to get labels or masking tape, a special marker, and will have to be careful about where you place the stickers. With regular cardboard boxes you simply write on them with any marker.

Less Flexibility

It might be understandable that people would put up with the negative aspects of plastic bins if they were more convenient. But they’re not! In fact, most companies that rent out these plastic storage bins for moving do so on a weekly basis, so you may end up paying to have the bins around longer than you actually need them for! You’ll also have to coordinate the pick-up and drop off of these bins with the rental company, with everything else involved with a move, who wants to add more responsibility to an already long task list? What’s more, if you aren’t fully unpacked by your bin pick-up date, you may be faced with another week’s rental fee.
